It’s been a long time coming, but the first image from Jay & Silent Bob Reboot has officially arrived. The characters of Jay and Silent Bob, portrayed by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith respectively, made their debut appearance in Smith’s first movie, Clerks, as two hilarious slackers who spend their time hanging around the Quick Stop dancing, harassing customers and occasionally dealing weed. Since then, the two have appeared in many of Smith’s movies, including Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks 2.
The pair even appeared in the cartoon Clerks: The Animated Series and the animated movie Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie. It was only a matter of time before Smith decided to bring the characters back for a live-action film, although that was initially supposed to happen in Clerks 3. Unfortunately, Clerks 3 never happened, due to an actor not wishing to reprise his role from previous films. In the end, Smith put aside the script for that movie and later announced Jay & Silent Bob Reboot in 2017. The title is a misnomer, though, as the film isn’t actually a reboot, but pokes fun at reboots by having the plot concern Jay and Silent Bob trying to thwart a reboot of the fictional Bluntman & Chronic movie.
Now nearly two years later, Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, which was picked up by Saban Films in January, is officially in production. Smith recently shared the first photo from the film showing himself and Mewes on set and in character. Though Smith’s Bob costume is the same, Mewes is sporting a different shirt, with a Ranger Danger design inspired by Smith’s fictional comic book character. Smith also announced that he’s documenting everything about the making of the movie on his YouTube channel:
In 2018, Jay and Silent Bob appeared on an episode of The Flash directed by Smith. Although the appearance of the characters was brief and they were never named onscreen, fans immediately picked up on it, which led to more anticipation about Jay & Silent Bob Reboot. Smith, who has directed several episodes of The CW show, even tapped The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Tom Cavanagh, and Carlos Valdes to appear in his new movie.
The new image proves that Jay & Silent Bob Reboot is officially happening. Smith recently announced that he’s aiming for a fall 2019 release for the film, which means he’s about to have a busy spring and summer working to bring this comedy duo back to the big screen in Jay & Silent Bob Reboot.
