The extended universe of Marvel Comics is expanding this fall with an officially licensed Marvel co-op board game that’s being launched right now as a Kickstarter-funded project with exclusive bonuses for early backers who pitch in between February 11th and March 4th. Whether players are old-school D&D fans, remember the Marvel’s classic role-playing games fondly, or just want to pitch Marvel’s iconic heroes against its diabolical villains, the new game is a fast-playing gaming experience designed to bring friends and family together.
Marvel is everywhere these days from the ubiquitous blockbusters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the expanding roster of shows populating the new Disney+ streaming service to incoming videogames that include an Iron Man virtual reality experience and the hotly anticipated Marvel Avengers game that was recently pushed back to September. That’s not including all the weird outliers like a life-sized Hulkbuster suit for a cool $21,500 or an Avengers Waffle Maker. Marvel has also had its share of analog gaming experiences including card games, battle dice, and even Marvel-based Monopoly but it’s been a while since we’ve seen a straight-up board game.
The new game is officially titled Marvel United and has been a cooperative development between Spin Master Corp., a global children’s entertainment company, and CMON Limited, an international publisher and designer of tabletop games whose brand affiliations have produced games based on popular franchises like God of War, Bloodborne, and Mark Morrison’s Kick-Ass, among others.
Marvel United will feature miniature figures representing Marvel’s celebrated heroes and villains. Backers who pledge $60 or more during the Kickstarter campaign will receive the core box and all applicable stretch goals as they unlock. Each player chooses a hero from a roster that includes Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain Marvel and Black Widow, whose goals are to defeat villains like Red Skull, Taskmaster and Ultron. Backers who pledge before Wednesday, March 4th will receive three additional miniatures (Nick Fury, Hawkeye and Corvus Glaive of Thanos’ Black Order) and can also pay $30 for an exclusive expansion pack featuring The Infinity Gauntlet. The game provides 40 to 60 minutes of play per game for two to four players.
With original gameplay by game designers Eric Lang and Andrea Chiarvesio and never-before-seen “chibi-style” artwork, this top-secret project is scheduled to be reach backers when Marvel Unlimited hits the retail market this Fall.
