Square Enix has released new artwork from their Final Fantasy VII Remake that replicates the original cover art of the PS1 title. Final Fantasy VII launched on the original PlayStation 22 years ago, and the remake is launching in about six months exclusively on PS4.

Final Fantasy VII is one of the key titles that put Square Enix (formerly known as SquareSoft) on the map in the west. The game is often associated with some of the best JRPGs of all time, and recently joined Tomb Raider in the World Video Game Hall of Fame. For its time, Final Fantasy VII features revolutionary pre-rendered cutscenes as well as a deep and intricate narrative. And of course, many fans can still remember the game’s striking PlayStation jewel case with its now iconic cover art. Now, that box art has been remade in a modern style to promote the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Square Enix posted the official artwork over on the Final Fantasy VII Remake’s Twitter account. Longtime fans will immediately recognize Cloud’s striking pose as he gazes up at the larger-than-life Shinra building. Final Fantasy VII presents many interesting themes that are still relevant today, such as the effects of capitalism when mixed with authoritarian powers. This cover image encapsulates those themes, depicting a Cloud ready to take down Shinra and the greater threat of the game’s true antagonist, Sephiroth.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was last seen at E3, where fans were given an in-depth look at combat and fan-favorite character, Tifa. The game will be arriving on March 3, 2020, but this release will only cover a small part of the story. Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to be broken up into parts, though how many is still unclear. Square Enix has said that each entry will be akin to a full-fledged JRPG with all of the content players would expect. The first entry will take place entirely in Midgar which roughly covers the first ten hours of the 40-hour story.

This artwork is a lovely reminder that many of the team members who had their hands on the original game are returning with Final Fantasy VII Remake. Tetsuya Nomura, who acted as the original character designer, is sitting in the directorial role this time around. The original director, Yoshinori Kitase, is acting as the game’s producer, and Kazushige Nojima, one of the people who co-wrote the game with Kitase, is returning as well. By all accounts, fans should expect a remake that truly honors and reimagines the original title.
