Over the course of almost two decades, The Fast and the Furious series has grown from small-scale heist films focused on street racing, to one of the world’s biggest action franchises. Along the way, it has slowly become the modern James Bond, mixing inventive action and schemes with a diverse cast and practical effects. The series’ international appeal has helped it earn billions at the box office, and the stars of the franchise have become some of the biggest names in Hollywood over the past few years.
In just two months, The Fate of the Furious, aka Fast 8, will attempt to tell a story in the wake of Paul Walker’s death and the exit of his character Brian. Though he was once the protagonist of the series, the cast has grown to include a sprawling ensemble. The new film is all set to be another hit, as the first trailer set a new views record. Since then, many have tried to figure out the plot of the film, and explain how Vin Diesel’s Dom could turn on his crew after seven films harping on the idea of family.
A new international trailer out today complicates the narrative even more. You can watch the short clip above, which packs in plenty of action and explosions. It also shows that Dom and Letty will be starting things off on their honeymoon down in Cuba when Charlize Theron’s mysterious villain shows up and somehow turns Dom against Letty and the team. What results is an all-out war between Dom and his old gang.
The new trailer follows the recent Super Bowl spot for the film, and we learned earlier this week about the movie’s potential runtime. All told, it looks to be another exciting entry into the action franchise, this time with quite a twist in the plot. It will also see the return of a number of franchise vets, like Jason Statham, while also introducing some new characters. Chief among the new faces is Helen Mirren, who seems to be taking a page out of Liam Neeson’s book by reinventing herself as an action star later in life.
We’ve previously seen this in the RED franchise, and now Mirren will be joining the Fast series as the mother of Deckard Shaw. Shaw, played by Statham, was once a villain, but will be joining the crew in their fight against Dom. Hopefully, we’ll get to see his mom behind the wheel, or at least toting a huge gun. Either way, The Fate of the Furious will be something to behold.
