Universal has released new posters for Fast & Furious 9, revealing John Cena’s character in the film. Over the course of nineteen years, Fast & Furious has evolved from a film series about illegal street car racing to a franchise about what’re essentially superheroes who save the world from mercenaries and cyber-terrorists. The property’s ensemble has only grown along with its scale, adding Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, Luke Evans, and Jason Statham to its universe while also bidding farewell to the late Paul Walker (who tragically died mid-way through production on Furious Seven).
Of course, all things must come to an end in time, and the core Fast & Furious movies will supposedly call it quits after Fast & Furious 10 (which is tentatively scheduled for 2021). In the meantime, Fast & Furious 9 will open this year, pitting Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto against a new danger that may or may not be the mystery character brought to life by Cena “The Champ” himself. Fittingly, the wrestler-turned actor is one of several F9 (yes, that’s the official title) cast members featured in the latest one-sheets.
Diesel and Cena have both received new Fast & Furious 9 character posters, as have their costars Michelle Rodriguez (Letty Ortiz), Ludcris (Tej Parker), Nathalie Emmanuel (Ramsey), Tyrese Gibson (Roman Pearce), and Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto). As you can see in the gallery below, these one-sheets continue to play up the mystery around the film’s plot by simply showing the cast with their vehicles against differently-colored smoky backdrops.
It’s nice to see Brewster back with the rest of the core Fast & Furious ensemble in these F9 posters. Because Furious Seven concluded by “retiring” Walker’s character, Brian O’Connor, by sending him off to lead a quiet life with Mia and their children, Brewster didn’t appear in its followup, 2017’s The Fate of the Furious. However, enough time has passed since then that it shouldn’t feel awkward for Mia to rejoin Dom and the others for their latest adventure after Furious Seven made such a big deal of her wanting to leave that world behind. Not to mention, the Fast & Furious 9 marketing has suggested Dom and his extended family are all leading a normal life when a new threat emerges in the film, putting them in danger. It only makes sense for Mia to return to the fray for a battle like that.
These posters further suggest Brewster will have a more active role to play in Fast & Furious 9 than she did in her last two Fast & Furious movie appearances (once Mia became a mother). The movie is expected to do better by its women in general, after Rodriguez publicly called out the Fast & Furious movie series for letting their female characters down back in 2017. She was even able to get a female writer involved in the film, which will hopefully translate into better roles for not only Mia, Letty, and Ramsey, but also Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron (who are returning as Magdalene Shaw and Cipher). Add that to the list of things to watch out for when the Fast & Furious 9 trailer finally drops this Friday.
