With plenty of hype and speculation continuing to swirl around the release of The Fate of the Furious this Friday, the latest word has the film’s writer discussing plans for future sequels. Following word from screenwriter Chris Morgan that might take the fast “family” to outer space in future installments, many fans are no doubt weighing the pros and cons of such an endeavor. Even as the series has become bigger in terms of blockbuster scale and scope in recent installments, taking the entire shebang on an interstellar journey might prove to be an especially arduous off-road detour.
Since the first installment was released back in 2001, Vin Diesel and co. have seen fit to turn out for what has become a mainstream mega-hit with the legs to give the likes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe a run for its money. And with current opening weekend box office projections slated to rake in $400 million worldwide, The Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray might be at the helm of another successful sequel despite mixed early reviews.
As far as where the series is headed after The Fate of the Furious, Morgan sat down recently with /Film to discuss his plans for an immediate franchise sequel. After glossing over potential sequels in space, Morgan got serious and talked about the wealth of narrative material that is left to explore, stating:
Unfortunately, Morgan didn’t definitively detail any explicit plans for the next film following The Fate of the Furious, though he was willing to comment on the process that each and every script goes through before shooting begins, saying:
“The way we tell stories over a long period of time really is more like a cable TV show. Every time we have a movie we don’t have to reestablish everything about the characters. People who come to the films generally know some of the backstory about the characters, so we can always forge ahead and let them grow. We don’t have to carry this obligation to reset everything for everybody. The problem is always the time. So you get essentially two hours every couple of years for one of these films, and a lot of that tends to have to be plot and we end up having a certain budget and things always get trimmed out for time or money.”
Many fans will undoubtedly be excited over the idea that The Fate of the Furious will be the first part in a trilogy in the larger franchise, and that fact might just sell more tickets as the new movie heads into its debut weekend. For now, hearing Morgan say that, “The things we set up in 8, we’re going to pay off in the trilogy,” offers incentive to head to theaters to see The Fate of the Furious.
“Vin and I have talked about this one for a while, because the intent is to do 8, 9, and 10 and to make it a trilogy. So how do they all connect, what are we moving toward, what’s that final end point? We’ve been playing around with that stuff, and the studio has announced dates on it, but in terms of the script actually being written right now, we’re not at that stage yet.”
The Fate of the Furious will see theatrical release in the U.S. on April 14, 2017.
