Number 10 will be the final installment in the long-running Fast Saga, but according to the franchise’s star and producer, Vin Diesel, Fast & Furious 10 could be two movies. After the original Fast & Furious film in 2001, Diesel left the franchise, and in his absence, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift hit theatres. However, in 2009, Diesel returned to revive the Fast series with a stronger focus on the theme of “family” and more high profile names such as Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Charlize Theron joining the cast. Now, Diesel and Universal’s franchise is thriving with the films (including the spinoff Hobbs & Shaw) having collected around $6 billion at the box office.
The latest film in the Fast Saga, F9, and will release in May. The Fast and Furious 9 trailer dropped last Friday, and along with the expected absurdity of unbelievable car stunts and adrenaline-pumping action, there was the continued push of “family” with the introduction, and return of certain characters. John Cena has seemingly taken over the wrestler-turned-actor spot, as he plays Dom’s younger brother Jakob. Also, we found out that there will be #JusticeForHan as Sung Kang’s Han Lue has seemingly returned from the dead. There seems to be a lot of questions surrounding the latest installment, and many believe these stories could continue into the tenth and final film. However, if some of these new stories do need more screen time post-F9, they may get two more films if Diesel’s latest comments are true.
In an interview from the latest issue of Total Film, the star of the Fast Saga discussed the future of the franchise, as well as what he has planned for Fast & Furious 10. Diesel said he “started planning for Fast 10 before we started filming Fast 9.” Also, while discussing the Fast universe growing and having spinoffs, he said: “And for the fans, should Fast 10 parts one and two be the conclusion, it would be nice for this world to continue for generations to come.”
It’s questionable if Fast & Furious really needs to take a page from the Harry Potter series and split their final film into two parts. Harry Potter’s were based on books, whereas Fast & Furious is a continuation of the franchise’s wild ideas. From a financial standpoint, it certainly makes sense, as both Fast & Furious 7 and 8 surpassed the billion dollar mark at the box office. Although, considering the potential returns of Johnson’s Luke Hobbs, and now even Cena’s character Jakob, as well as Han’s return, perhaps for the purpose of a satisfying conclusion, two films are necessary.
Once F9 has hit theaters, we will have more clarity on whether two parts are actually necessary for Fast & Furious 10, or if Universal and Diesel are simply looking to hold off on ending the saga for as long as they possibly can. However, considering the number of questions audiences have in regards to F9, and the selection of characters at their disposal, the creative team does have a lot to work with for two more parts. Although, if those less fond of the Fast & Furious films were hoping to see the end of the saga sooner rather than later, this news is sure to bring them disappointment.
