A new video for Fargo season 3 introduces the new storyline and Ewan McGregor’s characters, a pair of feuding brothers. Like the film that inspired the series, each season of Fargo begins with some otherwise average person making a very bad decision that leads to more bad decisions, that sets off a chain reaction that sucks more characters - some entirely innocent - into the ever-expanding whirlpool of madness. With a storyline that involves an escalating feud between a pair of brothers, both played by McGregor, and an investigation by a police chief cut from the same ultra-decent cloth as Marge Gunderson, season 3 doesn’t figure to change up the basic formula that much, though if we know anything about show creator Noah Hawley, there will no doubt be some curveballs along the way.
Early teasers for season 3 have already given us plenty to be intrigued about. At the top of everyone’s can’t-wait-to-see list is the dual performance of McGregor as brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy, the former a balding loser who feels he’s been ripped off by his own sibling, the latter the handsome “parking lot king of Minnesota.”
In a new first look video released by FX, we get our clearest glimpse yet of the not-so-loving brotherly relationship at the heart of Fargo Season 3. In the clip, it’s explained that Ray and Emmit had a falling out because Ray felt Emmit cheated him out of his fortune, and now Ray wants what’s his so he can use the money to marry his bridge-champion parolee sweetheart Nikki (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). In a tense moment between the two brothers, we find out that Emmit “hoodwinked” Ray into giving up a valuable stamp collection and now Ray wants the last stamp returned to him, but Emmit of course doesn’t want to give it up. In the next brief bit, Ray talks to a shady friend of his about getting the stamp (as we can imagine, they are not talking about politely asking him to hand over the item).
In typical Fargo fashion, it turns out the “lucky” brother Emmit isn’t as fortunate as it seems. In the video we see Emmit and his business partner Sy (Michael Stuhlbarg) meeting with David Thewlis’ V.M. Vargas about an obviously shady loan they took out. Vargas informs the men that their loan has been forgiven, but this news does not exactly make Emmit happy. And then there’s a murder, “one of those shoulda-coulda-woulda been somewhere else if he could murders,” which brings Carrie Coon’s Gloria Burgle character into the story for what is described as “a bit of a wild goose chase.”
“Misunderstandings lead to mishandlings that lead to misadventures in the typical Fargo sense,” Winstead explains, just before we see a shot of her character in a bathtub looking afraid while someone points a gun at her would-be fiancee Ray’s head. Who gets murdered? Where does Gloria Burgle’s wild goose chase lead her? Who ends up threatening Ray while a helpless Nikki looks on?
Michael Stuhlbarg sums it all up at the end with a line that might as well be the whole series’ tagline: “As you can imagine, things go wrong.”
