A pivotal scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home is proving even more important than it initially appeared to be, according to Tom Holland. The second entry in the franchise directed by Jon Watts set up a lot of moments which might not be followed up on, given the implications of the split between Sony and Marvel, but one of those moments stand out from the rest.
Far From Home benefited financially from its close association with Avengers: Endgame, exceeding expectations and breaking box office records. But it also received a boost from a narrative prospective as well. Taking place only months after the earth-shattering events of Endgame, the sequel to Homecoming follows a Peter Parker that’s even more uncertain of his place in the world than usual. Mourning the loss of his mentor, Tony Stark, Peter is torn between picking up the superhero mantle and living life as a regular teenager. The tension drives most of the film, leading to an extremely poignant scene which has been regarded by fans as one of the movie’s best.
Now, according to CBR, we’ve learned the scene was included in hopes that it would play a key role in further sequels. Speaking at a Comic-Con event over the weekend, Holland shed a bit of light on the bonding between Peter Parker and Jon Faverau’s Happy Hogan. “I think the best work I’ve ever done in any film is the scene with [Jon] Favreau on the plane, and that’s such a pivotal moment for the three films that we’re making — well, two films we’ve made, one film we’re making,” the actor explained. He added that he couldn’t say much more without veering into spoiler territory. And to be fair, Tom Holland’s been guilty of spoiling things in the past.
In the scene which Holland mentions, Happy Hogan comes to the rescue of an overwhelmed and beaten down Peter Parker. Doubting himself after the betrayal of Mysterio, and having inadvertently placed his friends in danger, Peter is dismissive of his ability to fill the void created by Tony Stark’s death. Happy Hogan has no such misgivings though, telling Peter that Tony second-guessed everything but he never second-guessed the decision to choose Peter as his successor. It’s a deeply emotional scene, both cathartic, and a little meta in how it seemingly positioned Spider-Man as the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There’s no telling what that future will look like now. Each day brings new developments, both big and small, on the ongoing controversy surrounding Marvel’s most famous character. Despite claims of finality from Kevin Feige, there is still a chance a deal could be reached. There are numerous theories from fans, including the idea that Marvel purposefully embedded Spider-Man so deeply into the MCU with the intention of making a split that much more difficult. But, at this point, very little is confirmed. At least on one front, thanks to Tom Holland, fans have confirmation that a standout scene in Far From Home was every bit as instrumental as it was poignant.
