A fan-made In Memoriam montage recognizes certain individuals who were ignored during the 2019 Oscars. While the montage that aired during the Oscars recognized everyone from Stan Lee to Margot Kidder to Burt Reynolds, it left out some major names who have made indelible marks on the film industry.
During the 91st Annual Academy Awards, the ceremony took a break from handing out awards to honor individuals affiliated with the film industry who passed away between the 2018 and 2019 Oscars. With a live orchestra and a composition written by Academy Award winner John Williams, Academy president John Bailey gave a short speech segueing into this year’s In Memoriam montage. However, there were quite a few names left off the list that didn’t go unnoticed. So, to honor those who were ignored, a fan created his very own montage to include everyone who was left out.
Charles de Lauzirika edited his own montage for everyone - or at least mostly everyone - who was left out of the 2019 Oscars’ In Memoriam montage. Sharing the video on his personal Twitter account, his montage looks identical to the one featured during ceremony, down to the starry intro and the music. Check out his fan-made montage below:
In the video’s Twitter thread, de Lauzirika admits that he also left out some notable names, saying, “It’s not perfect, but it’s from the heart.” However, he did remember to include such individuals as Carol Channing, R. Lee Ermey, Verne Troyer, Scott Wilson, Donald Moffat, Dick Miller, and Creature from the Black Lagoon’s Julie Adams, among others. The montage even includes Singin’ in the Rain director Stanley Donen who passed away a day before the Oscars ceremony. Donen received an honorary Oscar at the 1997 Academy Awards.
As upsetting as it might be to see certain individuals ignored at the Oscars, it’s worth keeping in mind that equal parts time and honest oversight played a part. Even though these people deserved a spot in the montage, human errors happen; and, seeing as ABC runs a tight ship when it comes to timing the Oscars, it’s possible that there simply wasn’t enough time to rework Williams’ composition, fix the edit, and still keep things on schedule. For now, it’s impossible to know why they were neglected. The important thing to keep in mind is that - given this new fan-made montage - even if they were neglected by the Academy, these individuals clearly weren’t forgotten by the fans.
