The first set photos for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have emerged, and they feature Bucky Barnes in normal, civilian clothing. Officially announced earlier this year, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be the first MCU show to debut on the new streaming service Disney+. A long list of shows will follow it, including WandaVision and Loki. Marvel head Kevin Feige has said the shows featured on Disney+ will tie into the films and have similar budgets. This is a major switch-up from how the studio used to approach television, with their shows previously being kept separate from the films.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will see Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) team-up in the wake of this year’s Avengers: Endgame. Sam will likely be adjusting to his new role as Captain America, though it’s been theorized that he will face opposition from the government. When it comes to Bucky, little is known about what he will be dealing with, but it’s assumed he will be recovering from his time as HYDRA’s secret weapon. The villain from Captain America: Civil War, Baron Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) will also return, as well as Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp). The series will also introduce John Walker, a.k.a. US Agent, played by Wyatt Russell.
JustJared posted a collection of pictures of Stan on set, and the photos appear to show the legendary Winter Soldier in civilian clothes. This is a highly-anticipated project that fans are eager to catch glimpses of, but it is hard to glean anything from the photos, as Stan is wearing normal, everyday clothing while standing on a sidewalk. Like previous bits of concept art have suggested, Bucky is sporting shorter hair this time around, reminiscent of how he first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger. This could indicate Bucky is trying to put his past as the Winter Soldier behind him by cutting his hair and reclaiming his own identity.
Marvel released a special called Expanding the Universe on Disney+’s launch day, which gave fans a look at the many MCU shows in development. Concept art for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was included, showing the designs for Bucky and Sam’s new suits. Glimpses of Sharon and US Agent were also shown. Filming on the series began only recently and was announced by Stan and Mackie online.
There isn’t much to see in these photos, but there is still enough to increase excitement. Bucky is a fan-favorite character, and his arc in the show is bound to be interesting. Bucky has never had a story that doesn’t involve his best friend Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), so this is an opportunity to show who he is on his own. Now that Steve is officially retired, Bucky has to confront a modern world he never wanted to be a part of while also recovering from years of HYDRA brainwashing. The reemergence of Baron Zemo suggests he won’t get much breathing room, but hopefully The Falcon and the Winter Soldier allows for some good character development in between all the action.
