Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Sebastian Stan releases the first official image of Bucky Barnes in the MCU Disney+ show. Officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier picks up following the events of Avengers: Endgame, when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) retired as Captain America. In one of the final scenes of the film, old man Steve gave the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), one of his closest allies. According to reports, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier story will deal with Sam receiving pushback in becoming the new Captain America. Thankfully, Sam will have Steve’s oldest friend, Bucky Barnes (Stan) as an ally of his own.
It’s unclear what exactly the plot of the upcoming Disney+ show will be, but The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will see the return of Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), the villain of Captain America: Civil War. Emily VanCamp also returns as Sharon Carter, while the series will introduce a new character in John Walker aka U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell). Although The Falcon and the Winter Soldier started filming late last year, there’s been very little officially revealed. Marvel debuted Falcon and Winter Soldier concept art in the Expanding the Universe Disney+ special, and unveiled images at CCXP last month, but those weren’t released online. Now, Stan himself debuts the first official image from the upcoming Marvel Disney+ series.
On Instagram, Stan posted an image of himself in costume as Bucky Barnes on set. Like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier CCXP images, it doesn’t reveal much - in fact, it may reveal even less since Stan is all in shadow. Still, his left arm is clearly outfitted with the Winter Soldier vibranium arm, indicating he is indeed filming on the Marvel show. Check out Stan’s photo below.
Since the series began filming in early November, quite a lot of Falcon and Winter Soldier set photos have surfaced, revealing Bucky’s new costume, first looks at Baron Zemo and Sharon Carter’s returns and other insights. However, this image marks the first official look at The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that isn’t concept art or a comic con-exclusive. Of course, Stan’s post doesn’t actually reveal anything; it’s difficult to even tell the actor is in his Winter Soldier costume since he’s mostly in shadow.
That said, if Marvel gave Stan the go ahead to release an official image from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier - even if it’s a set photo, not a still - it may be an indication the studio is getting ready to start promoting the TV show. When the series was confirmed at SDCC, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Disney+ premiere date was announced for Fall 2020. Since then, though, Disney+ revealed WandaVision will arrive in 2020, rather than its originally announced Spring 2021 release window. That could have pushed up The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, or Marvel always planned to release the show in early Fall.
Either way, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is next to release after Black Widow in May. Perhaps Stan’s post marks the beginning of the promotional push for the series. But even if it doesn’t, fans should learn more about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier sooner rather than later.
