Marvel fans already have an entire Falcon & Winter Soldier TV series coming to Disney+, but now it’s official: a brand new comic book miniseries will also be coming much sooner, uniting Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes for a five-issue adventure of life and death.
It’s possible that the Disney+ series will actually make Falcon the new Captain America, but in the world of the comics, both Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson occupied the role officially (following the death of Steve Rogers, and after Sam was passed the shield by Steve, much like the scene in Avengers: Endgame). And from the sound of the comic series, that shared title may be part of the reason why the two heroes are forced to team-up – to both stay alive, and prevent a massive Hydra attack.
The news comes hot on the heels of a telling batch of Falcon & Winter Soldier concept art, revealing the heroes’ new looks as they enter the next chapter of their MCU careers. The comic book counterparts are sticking to their existing uniforms, since their days as Captain America replacements are long behind them. But when a Hydra plot is discovered, Sam and Bucky tackle the job with the same heroism as their former partner, Steve Rogers. Check out Dan Mora’s official cover art for the 5-issue series below:
While the miniseries from Derek Landy and Federico Vicentini is squarely in the comic book realm, as opposed to the MCU or their Disney+ universe, the overlap between the presumed stories is interesting. While the TV series is expected to team Falcon and the Winter Soldier together thanks to the introduction of the dark Captain America replacement ‘US Agent,’ there is also the looming threat of the MCU’s Baron Zemo, apparently ascending to at least the look of his Hydra-leading comic book counterpart. The comic doesn’t claim to include either Sharon Carter or John Walker, their mission to track down and defeat Hydra’s mysterious new leader suggests these adventures will be perfectly paired.
Fans will know for themselves when Falcon & Winter Soldier #1 arrives in comic book stores this February 2020, with the Disney+ series expected closer to the end of the year.
