The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has added Supergirl’s Carl Lumbly to its cast, although his role is still a mystery. One of the most hyped programs coming to Disney+ this year, the MCU property is filling out its cast as production continues ahead of a summer release date on the streaming service. The superhero series is wrapping up filming in Atlanta, although production hasn’t gone off without a hitch, with a natural disaster bringing shoots in Puerto Rico to a halt.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan in reprisals of their MCU roles, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, respectively. The events of the series take place in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, when Captain America chose to stay in the past and seemingly passed the torch of his responsibilities (and his shield) to Sam Wilson. Every clue out of production suggests the tone of the series will differ from the recent Marvel movies, with more of a buddy, friendship comedy feel to it.

Per Deadline, Lumbly will be joining the cast of the series, and the veteran actor is no stranger to superhero shows. The 68-year-old recently had a recurring role on The CW’s Supergirl, playing M’yrnn J’onzz. He also voiced Martian Manhunter in a number of Justice League shows at the beginning of the century, making this a natural extension of his superhero capabilities. In addition to that experience, he starred as Dick Hallorann in 2019’s Doctor Sleep.

Lumbly joins a cast already filled to the brim with high-level talent beyond Mackie and Stan. Daniel Brühl and Emily VanCamp are set to reprise their own roles from the MCU, where they played Helmut Zemo and Sharon Carter, respectively. Shortly after that, Wyatt Russell was announced as a member of the cast as well. With the interconnected nature of the MCU, it also wouldn’t be a surprise to see some of the major players from the Avengers franchise pop up at one point or another.

While Lumbly’s role in the series is unclear, speculation suggests he could be playing Isaiah Bradley. He first appeared in a 2003 comic book designed by Robert Morales, Kyle Baker, and Axel Alonso, called Truth: Red, White & Black. Bradley’s canonical characterization is another byproduct of the World War II Super-Soldier program that created Captain America. In fact, Bradley is sometimes considered an alternative to Captain America. How Bradley would fit in the timeline of the show remains to be seen, as does whether or not that’s actually the character Lumbly will be playing.
