The cast of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has once again grown - this time adding two new actors in top-secret roles. Marvel Studios wrapped up a decade’s worth of storytelling earlier this year, concluding a huge 22-film saga with Avengers: Endgame. Garnering positive reviews, the film ultimately became the highest-grossing film of all time. The franchise shows no signs of stopping, however, with newly revealed details of Marvel’s Phase 4 plans and even elements of Phase 5 frequently emerging.
As well as dominating the big screen, the Disney-owned juggernaut will branch out into the world of television via the newly launched Disney+ streaming service. With Marvel Studios officially absorbing Marvel Television, a number of shows have already been confirmed - including Loki and WandaVision. Unlike previous Marvel TV efforts, the new shows will fully intersect with the movies. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is set to be the first one released. With Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their roles of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, respectively, the show will see them once again come up against Daniel Brühl’s Baron Zemo, in full comics accurate mask. It’ll also mark the first appearance of the titular characters since an elderly and retired Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) passed the shield and Captain America moniker to Sam Wilson.
According to Deadline, two more cast members that fans can expect are Desmond Chiam and Miki Ishikawa. After a number of guest-starring roles, Chiam enjoyed recurring roles on Now Apocalypse and as General Riga on The Shannara Chronicles. Ishikawa, meanwhile, was most prominently seen playing Amy Yoshida for 10 episodes of AMC’s supernatural anthology series The Terror. The outlet reported that Disney declined to comment on either casting. As such, details regarding both Chiam and Ishikawa’s roles remain firmly under wraps.
One element of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier that has been confirmed, however, is that Wyatt Russell will also star. Russell is set to play John Walker (aka U.S. Agent). Fans will recognize the name as one that serves plays an antagonistic role in the comics. As the government’s choice for who should actually take over the Captain America mantle, Walker is highly militaristic and ultimately an unstable reflection of Captain America. Both reasons will no doubt lead to numerous clashes with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes as they try to honor Steve Roger’s wishes.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will also get an official tie-in comic before the show’s release. While it will no doubt shed light on certain things, how each of the various threads will tie together won’t be fully known until all six episodes are officially released. However, it’s clear that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will focus on who gets to hold the shield. With a writer’s room that included John Wick’s Derek Kolstad, it will no doubt be an action-packed affair full of singular humor and intriguing expansions on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And with Chiam and Ishikawa’s roles shrouded in secrecy - right down to whether they will be friends or foes - it will no doubt fuel numerous The Falcon and The Winter Soldier theories and rampant speculation.
