An exclusive look at Nat Geo WILD’s latest series, Heartland Docs, DVM, introduces a pair of Midwestern veterinarians and a newborn calf, who seems to be making the best of things despite the unfortunate circumstances in which he came into the world. The new series follows in the footsteps of like-minded programs such as Dr. K’s Exotic Animal E.R., Dr. Oakley, Yukon Vet, and Dr. T, Lone Star Vet, showcasing the dedication and unique personalities of those who are committed to keeping animals of all shapes and sizes happy and healthy.
Part of the appeal of Nat Geo WILD’s programming is the network’s focus on the dynamic between veterinarians and their respective charges. The result is an entertaining brand of reality television in which unscripted moments with everything from hedgehogs to horned owls create both humor and drama — often plenty of both. It’s been a recipe for success for the network, which is why another new show is on the way, though with some slightly less exotic critters lined up in co-starring roles.
That’s not the only difference in Heartland Docs, which has two doctors on call, as the real-life couple, Drs. Erin and Ben Schroeder, remain committed to the Nebraska farming community in which they work. Their efforts not only help keep farms up and running but also help maintain the nation’s food supply. Being that livestock are mostly sizable creatures who’re difficult and expensive to move, the Schroeders are constantly on the road, traveling throughout rural Hartington, Nebraska to care for cows, pot-bellied pigs, llamas, deer, and, surprisingly, opossum. That sense of mobility plays an important part in the series as a whole, lending an element of unpredictability to Heartland Docs with each episode of the six-part series. It also helps differentiate the new show from its animal-centric counterparts, while illustrating the various challenges in caring for animals — exotic or otherwise.
So far, Nat Geo WILD’s line-up of veterinary shows has made for some fascinating and, provided you’re not made of stone, heartfelt content that might just teach viewers something in the process. From the look of things, Heartland Docs, DVM will continue that trend.
