Screen Rant’s exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from Child’s Play shows off footage of Chucky the killer doll and Aubrey Plaza, the human star of the horror reboot. The slasher genre is full of iconic monsters. From Jason Voorhees and Freddy Kruger to Leatherface and Michael Meyers, there is no shortage of colorful killers who inspire fear and fascination. However, one of the most unique slashers in the pantheon of horror has to be Chucky. In the original Child’s Play series, Chucky was a regular doll that became possessed by the spirit of deranged serial killer Charles Lee Ray. In the remake, Chucky is instead a metaphor for the dangers of connected technology and the ever-growing influence of the internet over normal life.
The Child’s Play remake earned surprisingly strong reviews when it launched in June, and proved its value at the box office, grossing nearly three times its modest budget of $10 million. Directed by Lars Klevberg (in his Hollywood debut), Child’s Play won praise for its gruesome and creative kills, provocative and timely themes, and delightful performances from Plaza and Mark Hamill in a decidedly different take on the source material.
In this exclusive clip from behind the scenes of the film, the cast and crew discuss the process of bringing Chucky to life. The new Chucky isn’t a carbon copy of the original, nor does it veer completely into new territory to the point of being an “in name only” version of the original. Remakes have to walk a fine line, paying respect to the source material without being beholden to the precedent set by their progenitor. In that respect, fans of the franchise have generally been welcoming to the remake of Child’s Play, and the care taken by the creative team is evident in this bonus footage.
On a meta scale, Child’s Play is in a unique position. It’s not really a reboot of the original, since the classic film series is not being discontinued in favor of this new version. Regardless of film studio Orion’s prospective plans for sequels to the new movie, original creator Don Mancini is moving forward with an eight-part miniseries, tentatively titled Chucky. The show continues where 2017’s Cult of Chucky left off and will see original star Brad Dourif reprise his role as the demon-possessed version of the terrifying Good Guy Doll, and is slated for release in 2020.
Basically, it’s a great time to be a fan of Child’s Play. Whether one craves the fresh reboot or the deep mythology of the original storyline, fans of every era of Chucky have something to celebrate. Classic era fans can look forward to the 2020 TV series, while newcomers to the franchise can pick up the home video release of the Child’s Play remake when it launches on September 24. The horror remake is currently available on Digital.
